Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is home to over 1,000 native species of flora and fauna. It’s the density of wildlife and the lodge’s delicate integration with the Clayoquot Sound ecosystem that makes the experience so unique.
For safety reasons personal pets aren’t permitted at the lodge – this is also in respect to the local animals particularly bears, who do not always see eye to eye with our furry counterparts. However, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge is lucky to have a host of our own (‘bear aware’) dogs who you can expect to meet during your stay!
Maui is the cuddly unofficial mascot of the lodge, and loves posing for a photo with guests!
A resident in the Bedwell for the last five years at least, she will most likely be waiting for you as soon as your plane lands. A husky cross, she is incredibly intuitive and using her sharp blue eyes she can milk a pat and a cuddle from the toughest of crowds. You can often find her laying outside the guides office asleep with all legs in the air, truly living the best life a dog can live.
If Maui is Queen of Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge then Sam the Labradoodle is king. The most mature in age and nature, he is incredibly gentle and even guests who have been visiting for years will attest they have never heard him bark. Sam can be found strolling around the outpost with his inquisitive gaze, as though he is making sure everything is up to standard. He will even bow to you if you say ‘Konnichiwa’. Not only is he bilingual, he has great manners!
Little sister to Sam is Sitka, a young rescue named after the towering Sitka tree at the camp’s epicenter.
Sitka is young, playful, and has enough energy for all the other dogs combined. Usually exploring in the trees surrounding the Lodge, she often blends in due to her dark coat. If you think you see a wolf lurking don’t worry, it’s probably just Sitka. If you do spot her on her adventures, you’ll notice she is usually boasting the grin of a dog in her element.
Not only are they incredibly photogenic (you can tell by our Instagram page), the team of dogs at the lodge are an integral part the Bedwell community. Leaving your beloved pet at home can be difficult, but rest assured you’ll be welcomed with a tail wag from one of our friendly canines.
